Side Two: St. Matthew is represented as a winged man because his gospel
narrative traces Jesus' human genealogy. Behind him the rope with the four
loops represents the four evangelists. At the bottom, the shield of St. Matthew
with the three purses symbolizes his original calling as a tax collector. On one
side of St. Matthew, the Missionary Cross and the Lamp. The Cross pointing
to the four corners of the earth and the Lamp, symbol of the Word and
Christian knowledge suggests spreading the Word of Christianity
throughout the earth. On the other side, the ship of the church,
tossed by the stormy waves, endures. Not even the gates
of hell can prevail against it.
